Apple Macintosh, with its latest entry into the operating system world, called OS X Lion, is clearly trying to make a complete shift into the digital world. This latest OS hints at making optical drives a thing of the past. For one thing, OS X Lion was only available as a digital download during its first month of release after which they have now begun selling USB versions of the operating system. Clearly our CD/DVD drives, are going to become things of the past. Relics of a forgotten time just like 8-track tapes. This is not the problem since all technology is bound to change, the real problem is that Apple once again has shown quite a bit of arrogance towards the end user because it is basically impossible to run any operating system prior to OS X Lion on a 2011 or later Apple Computer. So why not just run Lion ? After all it is the new ? The problem is some tried-and-true go to programs for power users simply do not work on Lion. Logic Pro for example and many of the external drivers that go along with having a digital audio workstation. There also many other peripherals and do not seem to work with Lion as of yet.
Boot, from any 2011 Macintosh, the Snow Leopard DVD from the optical drive. It simply will not boot. The Computer will instead give off three beeps as if you have a memory issue (as three beeps usually are on a Macintosh) but it is simply because the only OS you can run your new Mac is Lion. The only way (as of now) to run Snow Leopard if you have a new 2011 Apple Computer is on an external drive. You Will you have to buy the retail version of Snow Leopard disk, and load Snow Leopard on to the external disk. When you turn on your Mac hold down alt/option while the external drive is plugged in, and you’ll build a choose whether to run Lion (internal drive) or the external drive (Snow Leopard). This is the best solution though it is not perfect. For one thing the read/write speeds for extra drives are much slower signee task you’re doing will be slower. I have not had a chance to try Logic Pro using external drive and maybe it may work using Apple’s new proprietary Thunderbolt port. If you do not have Snow Leopard already installed on an external disk, and have a new Apple Macintosh than simply turn on your computer, hook up the external drive, by the Snow Leopard DVD (which will read running Lion OS X) and install it on the extra will drive from the actual operating system.

The digital age has arrived, we must either embrace it or fall to the side. This is not to be mean, or to say artists must understand technology very deeply, far from it. I’m suggesting that artists must now educate themselves, albeit in a very rudimentary way, to be better equipped to handle where the future of music is headed. I believe we have to give MP3 Previews of our work, so that people purchase our High Quality CD/DVD WORK AND go to our Shows. For example almost every song in the world is available in some format on YouTube or MySpace etc. Does this mean that because your favorite music is available in the .FLV format you wont buy the CD’s of your favorite Acts ? No, you will, and we do. FLV format is a compression method that You Tube uses along with others. MP3 format stands for motion pictures standard three, MPEG-4 would be motion pictures standard 4. This usually contains video, but will also contain a higher audio rate, more on that later in the next blog. Any compressed form on the Internet *compression is taking the original recording that is usually recorded in CD-quality, which is 44.1 kHz and “compressing” it by removing very important “pieces” of the original information to transmit the sound signal or video signal. This of course means that any compressed audio we hear is not even close to what we would hear in a live setting or on CD. Another blog will be about recording in 196 kHz, which would take a DVD to distribute, and it is what I record on and backwards compress because I believe it picks up more of the spectral sound range, even after compression, and leaves remnants of the depth of the sound that it tried to replicate. Tried to replicate, this is a key issue because we have come much much further in research and development when it comes to visual work when we compare it to the research and development we’ve put into audio. We can see this plainly in the monitors we buy for viewing DVDs or television shows. They can cost a very large sum have some of the finest pixel quality yet come with tiny box speakers. Furthermore, we have 3D film but we do not have 3-D sound. We are coming close with some people like earthshaking music in Atlanta, who sell very high and low wattage amplifiers and speakers would sound amazing and are very close to 3-D sound. Any researcher will tell you this is fact.
The research and development will come, that was a very long aside but necessary and you’ll find my writings (dictating in this case) that I will have many asides but taken as a whole it will all begin to make sense. What does this mean for us artists? Right now, the future of music at the very least depends to a great degree on the Internet. We as artists, at least as musicians, will need to be ready for an entirely different mindset. If we truly want quality to rise to the top, then we must take the measures required for the new world of music. Let’s take for example your favorite band, just because all their work is on YouTube or available freely on .fly format MP3 format, etc, almost 95% of us are still going to buy the actual CD or actual high quality digital copy that is legitimate and legal. The reasons morally are obvious for this, to be fair to the artist. I think more importantly we must understand that we’re getting a much higher quality recording. We are getting a recording as was intended by the artist himself or herself or themselves when we get the actual released 44.1 or 196 kHz release.
As far as the 1000 fan recommendation limit that reverb nation has, I will try to explain it as best as I can the way I see it. When we look at the reverb nation rules for band equity, we see that we have listeners over time. The amount of time assigned by reverb nation is a span of 14 days. This means that if I became a fan of yours 14 days ago on the 15th day that fan “equity” would not count towards your score (from what I understand) - so do not under any circumstances feel upset or even yourself guilty for fanning someone new making any recommendation and taking one or two of your other ones off. In the end it will balance itself out. As long as the one or two that you took off of your list you reciprocate by going back later and becoming their fan within 14 days (they can also come remind you gently by becoming your fan again) then the equity score will count. Without making it too complicated the long and short of it is this, when it comes to the 1000 recommendation limit, use your judgment and also do not get upset because we all will lose one or two fans here and there and gain them back in order to keep the circle flowing. In fact this allows us to explore new music, without hurting each other’s feelings because we understand why we must do this, and also support other artists and keep our own equity up at the same time.
Some of you will say why does equity matter this is about the art? Will I say to you, that is simply not the case. We all want to make it or else we would not have bothered putting any of our music out in the public eye. There are many musicians throughout time, great ones who have refused to perform in public or show their art in public. By the very act of putting your heart in public you are saying I want to perform or display it. My fan base consists of artists you amazing people that are reading this right now. I cannot tell you how much he means to me to be supported by such awesome people. I will always be there to support all of you.
To be continued every day
Love and solidarity
